Beware of the hidden import costs, delays and uncertainties of online marketplaces

When you place an order with WeddingMart, you’re not just buying style and quality at low prices, you’re also benefiting from our global supplier relationships and buying expertise.

Items displayed as “In Stock” are genuinely in stock at our Birmingham-based warehouse and available for next day delivery if you order before 1pm Monday to Thursday. Our standard delivery service will still see your items delivered within just a few days.

Plus, if you’d like a fabric sample before making a purchase, we can send you one. If you have any questions, you can contact our UK-based customer service team. Your purchase will also be covered by our 30 day returns policy, as well as all UK laws and regulations, so you can buy in absolute confidence.

Unfortunately, a number of our customers have not experienced such service and value before buying from WeddingMart. They had searched the internet and been tempted by offers on one of a number of online trading websites, which purport to connect buyers directly with overseas manufacturers.

In the worst cases, people have simply been victims of fraud - where goods are paid for but never received. Overseas suppliers are not under the jurisdiction of UK law, so there can be little to nothing that can be done to recover lost funds.

Even when goods are received, they are typically accompanied by a range of hidden costs and long lead times - with no cost-effective means of returning goods.

We were recently approached by an entrepreneur who had been establishing an event management company. Their online research appeared to show wedding decorations available from China that were cheaper than those available from UK suppliers - so they placed an order directly with a company in China.

The sellers terms dictated that a 30% deposit had to be paid up front, with goods available to ship after two weeks and the balance due once goods were ready for dispatch.

After two weeks, the events management company received an email with an impressive set of product images and a request for the final balance. They paid and things started to go wrong.

What had appeared to have been bargain priced products were accompanied by large shipping costs and were liable for customs charges in order to enter the UK. After waiting more time for the goods to finally arrive, they had taken much longer to arrive and cost more than if they had been purchased directly from the UK.

Worst of all, the goods weren’t of the quality that was expected - so the entire order was wasted, with no refund possible.

So if your online research shows apparent bargain prices from overseas suppliers, it is imperative that you consider the full extent of shipping and customs charges, long delivery times, plus all the inherent risks of buying with little buyer protection.

We are confident that our global supply chain expertise will provide you with lower overall costs and much shorter delivery times. Plus, if you need more products, upgrades or extension kits, you can be sure they’ll be compatible with your initial purchase.

Buy with style, quality and low prices in complete confidence with WeddingMart.
